Gboard voice typing not working? Try these fixes

When Gboard voice typing stops working, the symptom usually tells you where to look. A missing microphone points to a Gboard setting. A mic that opens but hears nothing points to permission or Android's global microphone switch. "Advanced voice typing unavailable" is often a device, language, or update requirement rather than a broken mic.

Try these fixes in order

1. Turn on Android's microphone access. Swipe down twice and check that the Microphone access tile is enabled.
2. Allow Gboard to use the microphone. Open Settings → Apps → Gboard → Permissions → Microphone, then choose Allow only while using the app.
3. Turn on Voice typing in Gboard. Open the keyboard, tap its gear icon, choose Voice typing, and enable the main switch.
4. Restart the phone. This reloads Gboard and the speech services it depends on.
5. Update Gboard. Open its Google Play page and install any pending update.
6. Clear Gboard's cache. Go to Settings → Apps → Gboard → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Do not clear storage yet.
7. Check the language. For advanced voice typing, your primary device language and primary Gboard language must match.
8. Reset Gboard only as a last step. Clear storage or reinstall the app after the safer fixes fail. This resets Gboard's settings and learned data.

If the microphone icon is missing

Open Gboard Settings → Voice typing and turn Voice typing on. If you cannot find the gear, tap Gboard's four-square menu and drag Settings into the toolbar. Also confirm that Gboard—not another keyboard—is the active keyboard for that text field.

If the microphone disappears only in one app or one field, test it in Gmail or Keep. Password, PIN, and other sensitive fields intentionally block dictation. A one-app failure is not evidence that Gboard itself is broken.

If the microphone opens but no text appears

Record a few seconds in your phone's Recorder or Camera app. If that recording is silent, the problem is below Gboard: check Android's microphone access control, the app permission, and whether another app is already using the microphone. Android shows a green microphone indicator when an app is listening; tapping it identifies the app.

If the recording sounds normal, return to Gboard, clear its cache, and restart the phone. Clearing cache removes temporary files without deleting your keyboard settings. Clearing storage is more disruptive, which is why it belongs at the end of the list.

If advanced voice typing is unavailable on a Pixel

Advanced voice typing requires a Pixel 6 or newer. On a newly set up Pixel, Google says the required updates can take several hours to arrive. Connect to Wi-Fi, restart the phone, and leave it charging overnight. On Android 12, also update Android System Intelligence from Google Play.

The primary Gboard and device languages must match, and advanced mode supports a smaller language set than standard dictation. Google's advanced voice typing help page lists the current requirements and supported languages.

If Gboard keeps stopping halfway through

Test a short sentence on Wi-Fi and another on mobile data. Standard Gboard talk-to-text can depend on Google's transcription service, while supported Pixel advanced voice typing handles the main dictation on the device. An unreliable connection can therefore affect one mode more than the other.

If voice typing works again but standard mode still misses punctuation or leaves filler words in place, that may be a limitation of the selected voice-typing mode rather than a fault.
