How it works

  1. 1

    Choose your video

Up to 300MB and 90 minutes long.

  2. 2

Audio is extracted in your browser

Your browser pulls out just the audio track and sends only that — on most browsers the video itself never leaves your device.

  3. 3

    Copy or download

The transcript appears as editable text, ready to copy or download.

Why use it

Your video usually stays put

The audio is separated out on your own device, so a 300MB video becomes a small upload — and the video itself never goes anywhere.

No separate extraction step

Choose the video directly — there's no need to pull the audio out yourself first.

Clear errors, not silent failures

A video with no audio track gets a clear error instead of an empty result, usually before anything is uploaded at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is Video to Text free?

Yes. It's free with no account required, limited to a fair-use number of transcriptions per hour.

What video formats are supported?

MP4, WEBM, MOV, MKV, AVI, and 3GP.

What's the file size and length limit?

Up to 300MB and 90 minutes per file on the free tier.

Does my video get uploaded anywhere?

On most browsers, no. The audio track is separated out on your own device and only that small audio file is sent for transcription — the video itself never leaves your computer. Older browsers that can't do this fall back to sending the video, where the audio is extracted to a temporary file just long enough to transcribe it and then deleted immediately. Either way, your video is never stored.

Does it work if my video has no audio track?

No — it needs an audio track to transcribe. You'll get a clear error if the file has none, on most browsers without uploading anything at all.

What languages can it transcribe?

100 languages. The spoken language is detected automatically from the video's audio track, and you can also set it explicitly before uploading if auto-detection gets it wrong.
